  3. It should look healthy, not too fat, not emaciated.
  4. It shouldn´t tremble.
  5. It should hunt and eat like there is no tomorrow.
  6. Is it attentive? It should be!
  7. If the dragon has any disortions like a hunchback for example, do not buy it!

Preparation is everything!

A lot of people make terrible mistakes when getting a bearded dragon. Wrong tank, wrong tank size, wrong lighting, wrong food and so on and so forth. That is because really many people buy new pets spontaneously. However if you want to buy a bearded dragon it is critically important that you are prepared for the dragon. Otherwise your beardie might get sick, or even die!

Before buying a bearded dragon you should get a lot of info about these animals, if you are reading this article, you are on the right track :)

If you are an absolute beginner when it comes to reptiles, I recommend you to read a book on bearded dragons to make sure that you understand the basics.

Adult bearded dragons need a lot of space, because you have to get a big tank for them. Further dragons should eat insects and other crawlies, I mean they also eat salad, but you have to feed them live food at least twice a week. Are you okay with that?

When I was a beginner, it was a little bit weird for me to buy locusts and have them in my room and feed them my reptile. However I got used to it very quickly.

Still want to buy a bearded dragon?

Baby Bearded DragonYou still want to buy a beardie? Awesome! I totally understand that :)
Here is what you should know when buying a bearded dragon.

Often times salespersons in pet shops want to make you think that you have to buy at least two bearded dragons, because they would be lonely if you only buy one. Do not believe that!

In fact bearded dragons are loners and most of the times it is better to get only one dragon instead of two or even three. Two males will most probably fight as soon as they get older. However the same can also happen if you get two females, you never know. If that is the case, you have to separate them. Therefor you need two tanks, for two tanks, you need a lot of space. Do you have that space? If not, you should only get one beardie.

Look closely before you buy

If you decide to buy your bearded dragon in a pet shop, you should have a closer look at the bearded dragon you want to buy.

In pet shops often times they have a lot of baby bearded dragons and they throw them all together in one tank. That means the babys do not have enough room and that can lead to oppression and even cannibalism!

That´s why you often times see bearded dragons with a missing tail tip or with missing toes. So have a closer look at the dragon and decide if you want to buy it.

If you even see some babys with missing limbs in the tank, I recommend to leave the pet shop and buy elsewhere. This would be a clear indication for an irresponsible pet shop.

However you can also buy your beardie from a breeder.

Also many people order their bearded dragons online. I have a lot of friends who did this and all of them were really happy about it. They got healthy little babys without missing toes or with a missing tail tip.

Here are some other things you should know when getting a bearded dragon:

  • It should not be emaciated
  • It should not be to fat
  • It should not tremble or have problems with coordination
  • It should hunt and eat with joy
  • If you take it on your hand it should be attentive, it is also normal if it blares out a threat :)
  • Look for distortions, if it has a hunchback or something like that, do not buy it!

Transport

There is not much to say about this, because I think you will get a little transport box from the breeder or from the pet shop if you buy a dragon there.

Only make sure, that it is not too cold for you bearded dragon while transporting it and it also should not be too hot, even if they come from Australia and love heat.

Further you should make sure that your dragon can´t see anything except the inside of the box while transport. It would be too much stress for it if it could see everything outside.

Put a paper towel inside the transport box, so the beardie can hold something.

A new home

You terrarium should already run and it should have the right temperature. If you do not have a terrarium have a look at this article. I compiled complete tanks for you which are ready for your bearded dragon. Simply choose your budget and get the complete terrarium.
